Origami fish and wrapping patterns

Posted

Any entry about Robert Lang needs to be longer than one I have time to write right now; he’s many things: an engineer and a physicist, a mathematician and an artist (and a supporter of the Theater Arts at Caltech; a plaque with his name hangs outside our scene shop).

I had a chance to visit his exhibition Folded at the Art Center College of Design here in Pasadena.

Remarkable folded sculptures of falcons and owls and bats live in the same room as giant posters of math and computer code. Maybe that’s what goes on inside Robert Lang’s mind: Origami koi fish swimming up walls around laser-precise mathematical folded swirls.

Folded runs at the Williamson Gallery 17 June to 20 August.
